Homeowner Insurance: Make sure you're covered against life's accidents

Buying insurance is like buying art, says Blumenthal - different things have a different value to everyone. So a homeowner with a basement entertainment room and a hookup to a municipal sewer system is going to need different insurance coverage than the person with an unfinished basement for storage and a septic tank; and they both have different needs than the condo owner on the 22nd floor.

Fall's a good time for planting trees, but homeowners need to study up first

When Lynne and Kemper Smith moved to Golden, Colo., from Florida six years ago, they bought a new house and planted trees — fruit trees out back and a cache of aspen near the front door.

Very Colorado, those aspen.

Unfortunately, it was the wrong part of Colorado.

"I was a Florida boy and didn't know what I was doing," Kemper Smith says. "I didn't know they'd get this big."

Homebuilders and homeowners often plant trees too close to houses, power lines or roads because they don't consider how the trees will look 20 or 30 years down the road. They choose trees that aren't necessarily suited to the soil and region.

TD overhauls mortgage program as housing market slows

TD is revamping its mortgage program, making it easier for homeowners to tap into their equity and harder for them to switch to another lender when their mortgages come up for renewal.

At the heart of the overhaul is a switch to collateral-charge mortgages, which are similar to lines of credit. The bank is encouraging employees to approve customers at 125 per cent of a home’s actual value under certain circumstances, so the homeowner can easily borrow more money if their property increases in value.

NIMBY is a major impediment to Edmonton's subsidized housing

Experts say NIMBY thinking is a major impediment to building subsidized housing throughout the city and is often based on misperceptions about the effects on property values and crime rates.

"The only way to combat NIMBYism is to fight it with facts," said Sharon Shuya, manager of regional projects for Alberta's Capital Region Board. "(Subsidized) housing doesn't hurt communities. As soon as people forget who lives there, it becomes transparent. A lot of the objections, there is no basis for them."
